Petition
for release of Dr. Binayak Sen from imprisonment |
| |
|
|

Dear
friends, |
|
| |
|
|
| |
It is with a heavy heart that I inform you about
the arrest of Dr. Binayak Sen, (MBBS alumnus batch of 1966). After
a distinguished academic career in CMC, Vellore, Binayak was a faculty
member at the Centre for Social Medicine and Community Health at
the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. He left his academic
appointment to work with a community based Rural Health Centre in
the Hoshangabad District of Madhya Pradesh, focusing problems of
tuberculosis. He then worked with mine workers in Dalli Rajahara
addressing their health needs, helping them set up an effective
system and enabling them to manage their own Shaheed Hospital. He
then moved to a mission hospital in Tilda and later moved to Raipur.
Over the past 15 years, he has been working towards developing relevant
models of primary health care in Chhattisgarh. He was a member of
the state advisory committee to initiate the community based health
worker programme across Chhattisgarh, now well known as the Mitanin
programme. In recognition of his work, the Christian Medical College,
Vellore conferred the highest award – the Paul Harrison Award
in 2004. In all that he has done, Binayak epitomises the true spirit
of the Christian Medical College, Vellore and its motto “Not
to be ministered unto but to minister”.

Binayak
has been actively involved in defending the liberties of the disadvantaged,
especially through the Peoples’ Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL).
He has helped organise fact finding campaigns into human rights violations
in Chhattisgarh. In recent times, his efforts have been to try and
put an end to malgovernance and oppression through the Salwa Judoom
in Dantewara. He has worked hard to defend the rights of Mr. Piyush
Guha who is now in police custody. This led to threats and allegations
against Binayak. |

| |
We
request each one of you to do everything possible so that Dr. Binayak
Sen is not harmed. We as an institution will seek his release and
work towards ensuring his safety and dignity. |

As
you aware, Dr. Binayak Sen (MBBS Batch of 1966 Christian Medical
College, Vellore) has been under judicial custody from May 14, 2007
in Raipur for his civil liberties work among the tribals of Chattisgarh.
Binayak is one of our distinguished alumni who has been actively
involved in defending the liberty of the marginalised. We have requested
the President of India, Prime Minister of India, President of the
National Human Rights Commission and Governor of Chhattisgarh to
intervene and arrange for his release. |
